SMALL TOWN VIBES

Recommended >>> call each business for updates on their operations! My notations cannot keep up with small town business owners changing their routines.

Expect a tiny, sleepy town when you arrive ♥

ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ

WIFI & CELL  DON'T COUNT ON IT

Marfa is located at 4,685 feet elevation on a plateau surrounded by mountains in the high desert three hours away from the nearest city.

Cell service is not reliable in this remote area. AT&T has dead zones. Sprint is spotty. Weather-related internet outages are possible. Lost text messages, no cell phone service on your provider... both occur often.

As of May 2023, Big Bend Telephone Fiber internet service is at the Castle Top House. 100 mbps. This is the most reliable internet provider in the area. Hold hands and rejoice!

If you are traveling to Far West Texas on business with dire intentions to use the internet anywhere in town and place phone calls with ease, you should prepare your phone with a hot spot before you arrive and hope that your cell service is strong. Local business owners have no power to assuage emotional reactions to poor connection scenarios.

This concludes the Reception Expectations Public Service Announcement ♥

VISITOR TIPS

Marfa is on small-town-time. Service is slower and local establishments have flexible open-days and open-hours. Marfa is a destination for travelers. It is also a tiny town with limited resources (human and otherwise). Thank you for your visit and for your understanding! You’ll notice that the person who served you your coffee is also the person leading your foundation tour (is also the artist with the opening / is also the business owner of the other thing / and on it goes). It’s called the Marfa Hustle. Many folks have three jobs. Marfa is glad you’re here! If you weren’t, Marfa would not be the same ♥

Marfa is made of many layers, social and otherwise. There are born and raised and proud community members raising their families and working the jobs that are the very foundation of this town. You may or may not encounter the multiple layers of people and lives. For many folks nothing about Marfa is a pop-up art destination that occurred in the last 30 years. Marfa is, simply and very importantly, home ♥

ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ

THE TRAIN THAT RUNS THROUGH MARFA

Passenger and freight trains run on the tracks straight through the middle of town. There is no escape from the horn of the train at any hour of the day or night, no matter your location. The conductors lay hard on the horn when they pass through Marfa. This is because there have been an unreasonable number of deaths on the tracks, travelers and locals both. Do not pause on the train tracks. Do not take selfies on the train tracks. And please, do not complain about the conductor’s horn ♥

CLOSEST DAY HIKE

Davis Mountains State Park is 30 minutes north of Marfa just outside of Fort Davis. Highway 17 will take you from Marfa through Fort Davis to Highway 118, park entrance on left. The park has serene 1-5 mile hikes with lovely encompassing views. The park is nestled in the foothills of Texas' most extensive mountain range.

ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ ˇ

BIG BEND BY CAR

Day trip pamphlets await you in your suite. You may also visit the Marfa Visitor Center to obtain pamphlets to take with you. Big Bend is glorious and extensive. Below are some links and tips for travelers who have plans to visit the national and state park lands before, during, or after a stay in Marfa.

The River Road between Presidio and Lajitas is breathtaking. Not for the faint of heart, the paved road has dips and hills that will turn your tummy. 50 miles following the Rio Grande between Mexico and the U.S. If you are departing the park at the break of dawn and headed for Marfa (or vice versa), do not hesitate – take the River Road route.

Pinto Canyon Road is also glorious. It is NOT paved. ONLY DRIVE IT IN A 4X4. You MIGHT make it safely in a low clearance 2WD vehicle or you might bottom out, get stranded with no water, not see any passersby for 2 days, and meet your end in the desert.

If you truly possess a 4x4 and you’re super cool then there’s this Big Bend Roads to Nowhere Guide. You must have a 4x4 and be super cool though.

VACATION RENTAL HOMES ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF BIG BEND

If you’re not camping but you want to have Big Bend at your fingertips minus the crowds then skip the crowded Chisos lodge rooms and rent a secluded home at the edge of the park. Big Bend Vacation Rentals is a family-owned property management service that has an awesome selection of private homes available for you to rent during your Big Bend adventure.
